About Erica F. Battle

Curator Erica F. Battle works across organizations and sites to catalyze artistic visions through her independent curatorial practice, BATTLE Projects. She believes that encounters with the unexpected—in public and civic space, inside of arts organizations and through non-traditional platforms—can generate discovery, shift perspectives, and inspire innovative thinking.

Drawing upon decades of experience working closely with emerging and established contemporary artists, Battle produces exhibitions, commissions, and written contributions that carve out imaginative and impactful narratives for the artists and organizations with which she collaborates. Her interdisciplinary projects focus on the experiential nature of contemporary art and rethinking historical frameworks that shape urgent dialogues of today. Through events focused on curatorial dialogue and professional development, she is also committed to both sharing and amplifying her expertise by engaging creative communities.

Battle served as the John Alchin and Hal Marryatt Curator of Contemporary Art and Interim Head of the Department of Contemporary Art, among other roles, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2006-24). She is an alumna of the University of Pennsylvania and the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College.
